Here's some questions I've answered about vehicle air conditioning and heater systems. Maybe they can help you sort out your problem! If not, feel free to contact me!

I have a customer with a 1971 Cadillac Limo-Hearse 472 CID Special Build 'Flower Car'. After previous AC repairs , system was cold at 40f, but customer complaint of system intermittant; not getting cold at all despite the fact he could hear/feel compressor engaging. Then system would work normally again later in the day. A/C system on this vehicle is one of the clunky early style climate control systems, Delco A6 compressor. Recheck of system shows freon is still full. Anyone with more experience on this older system have any insights before we tear back into it? Compressor turns, no unusual noises. Fan blows, condensor appears clear for airflow, and did not appear plugged during system cleaning when dryer was replaced. Car is a rust bucket, most all fittings rusted solid, most wiring older than ceasar. But it all sorta works. Previous technician who did work and diagnosis(1 month ago) is out for 2 weeks on vacation. So we are starting fresh, and he is our "A/C guy" so all help/suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It's been awhile, but I think those climate controlled via positioning of an air blend door. This sticking would be in line with the "rustcase" scenario........

Several possibilitys: bad heater shutoff valve, vacuum control thereof, clogged heater core (ref my website for description)or even the control head (thing with the control buttons on it.

All $100 or so.

how do you diassemble an airconditioning unit from a 1990 eagle priemer? Is >there a special tool needed?

If it has slip fit quick connect fittings, yes, there is a special tool. Your local Snap-on, Mac, or Matco dealer will have them: there's a set of 4 sizes.

Thank you for visiting the ECONOMECHANIX WEB SITE. Please feel free to comment. We also serve the surrounding communities of Alachua, High Springs, Hawthorne, and Newberry! Gainesville has been my home since 1974, and I've loved Gvl and the Gators since I came here in the fall of 1974 to attend the University of Florida. I loved it so much I stayed and opened my car repair business. Originally it was out of the back of a 1963 Chevrolet wagon, but in 1977 a fellow mechanic and I opened an auto repair shop with actual walls, etc. I stayed in the same location for 26 years, and recently moved my operation to property I bought 15 miles east of Gainesville. I am doing most all the repairs myself now, having reduced my overhead from $1500 per month to practically nothing. I do work by appointment only. I mostly work only on my established customers cars, but I will occasionally take on new clients. E-mail me and I will either make arrangements to look at your car, or I will recommend you to someone who will.
